Top place in poll for Nationwide

February 20, 2008

The major high street banks in the UK have all been beaten by a building society in a poll to reveal which is the most trusted bank or building society amongst consumers in the UK. Over recent years consumer trust in banks has dwindled over issues such as security breaches and bank charges, but the big banks have still been insisting that they provide top notch service and reliability.

However, despite these claims the poll, which was carried out by Moneysupermarket.com, showed that the most trusted bank or building society was actually the Nationwide. The Nationwide was the only building society to get into the top ten, and officials said that this made its position in first place even more impressive.

A number of areas were measured in order to determine which was the most trusted, and this included service levels and reliability, which consumers were particularly happy with from the Nationwide. The building society received 18.7% of the vote in order to get to first place.

In the meantime, troubled bank Northern Rock. Which enjoyed a reputation as the nation’s fifth largest mortgage lenders for some years, received only 0.5% of the vote. Second place in the poll went to NatWest, which received 13.3% of the vote, and other featuring in the top 5 included Halifax, Lloyds TSB, and HSBC.
