EU set to send flood money to the UK

December 17, 2007

The European commission has recommended that Europe donate £115 million to the UK after the devastating summer floods. It is certainly a welcome move as many places that were affected by the floods still continue to struggle today, a few months on from the disaster.

The floods were the worst that they have been in many years and it is thought that an estimated 48,000 homes were affected. Also roughly 7,000 businesses were affected too which really did affect the communities and the economy within the UK.

After the floods the government did actually put in for compensation from the EU Solidarity Fund. The damage that was estimated came up to just over £3 billion and now the true amount of what will be given is to be decided by the EU ministers and the European Parliament. The money that would be given is set to put the basic infrastructure back into working order according to the European Commissioner.

Some help has already been given to those who suffered from the floods over the summer, but a lot more does still need to be done. The government gave £63 million out to the worst affected areas but unfortunately it is just not enough. So the decision made by the European Parliament will be long awaited.

The worst affected areas included Yorkshire and Humberside, the Midlands and South-West England. There were also flood warnings in the London and South-East area a month ago which sparked fresh fears about the flood defences within the UK.

Overall hopefully if the government get the funding that they need from the EU, the UK will start to have better flood defences put up. If not it is only a matter of time before problems start to arise again. With so much damage already, another flood could really ruin a lot of families lives as well as close thousands of businesses down and that would be a disaster for the UK’s economy.
