Many consumers have a lack of awareness when it comes to interest rates
December 28, 2006
Unbelievably, when it comes to interest rates on credit cards, many people simply have no idea how much they are being charged. It seems that despite the high amount of debt within the UK these days, the message simply is not deterring consumers from spending on their credit cards.
This lack of awareness is quite startling as it gives out the message that consumers have a lot of money. However that could not be further from the truth as more and more people put themselves in debt, often from their complete unawareness.
Store cards are the worst ones as people only think about the discounts which they are receiving and the interest rate never really gets thought about. After all, you are offered huge discounts on everything so why would you care what the interest rates were?
The problems arise when large items are bought on these store cards and the benefits are often overshadowed by the high interest rates. In fact, most people do not realise just how high the interest rates are until their monthly statement comes through. Even if they knew previously that the store card offered 19% for example, at the time it does not seem like much money. It is simply a number and until that first bill comes, the extent of that number does not really come into play.
There really is a huge need for consumers to become more aware of these high interest charges before they make any purchases. Store cards can be a good idea but only when they are used wisely. If you do think it will take you a long time to pay the overdue balance off then the best kind of card to opt for is the zero interest card. This offers you a certain amount of time interest free and it really can help to save you a lot of money in the long run!
