High Street to see huge cuts over coming weeks
November 28, 2008
For many shoppers in the UK Christmas has come early this year, with reports claiming that huge discounts are expected to be seen on the High Street over the coming weeks in the run up to Christmas. Many major stores have already been holding events with slashed price goods to try and tempt consumers into spending money with some cutting up to 75 percent off the cost of some items.
One official from Sainsbury’s said that after discounting prices last week they receive a mass influx of shoppers looking to toys for Christmas presents. The store is planning similar discounts on other Christmas goods such as crackers and cards, and expect similar levels of interest from consumers who are trying to bag a bargain.
One retail suppliers said that this was definitely going to be a Christmas of discounted goods, adding: ‘In this environment, you’d be mad to pay full price for anything. This is going to be a discount Christmas.’ Major stores such as Debenhams and Marks & Spencer have kick started the sales early this year after slashing their prices over the past week or two.
Retailers have been forced to take action and cut their prices as a result of the ongoing financial crisis which has left many struggling to find the money to spend on Christmas. Discounts have been applied by many shops in an effort to try and boost spending and stop profits from slumping further.
