RBS launches Tap and Go for mobiles
November 23, 2007
The Royal Bank of Scotland has developed a method of using the ‘Tap and Go’ system with a mobile phone and plans to trial the technology in public next year.
Tap and Go mobile payments will work in the same way as they do when using a card, using Maestro Paypass.
Users are able to touch their mobile phones on a contactless payment terminal to process their transaction.
Paul Geddes, chief executive, consumer banking at the Royal Bank of Scotland, explained the thinking behind introducing the innovation.
He said: "We decided to trial this payment innovation because we think people will really welcome the speed and convenience of reaching for their mobile phone to make a payment, instead of worrying about whether they have enough loose change in their pocket or locating their wallet."
As with the current Paypass system, items up to the value of £10 can be purchased.
