Mums spending big

October 29, 2007

Mums spending bigBritish mothers are spending a large amount of money each year on designer baby accessories, pampering and other luxuries, according to new research.

Egg, the online bank, has conducted a study which has revealed that mums in Britain spend up to £6 billion "to keep up with the perfect image of a ‘Yummy mummy’".

It was found 23 per felt pressurised to buy a designer buggy, 12 per cent designer highchairs, while 87 per cent admitted buying new clothes and having their hair done shortly after the birth.

Egg’s chief marketing officer, Alison Wright, commented: "Financially a new baby can cause havoc because of the combined burden of extra costs and reduced income.

"This is where a little bit of financial planning can go a long way ensuring new mums can enjoy being new mums without having to worry about money matters."

On average, women spend an estimated £939 on baby-related items in preparation for the birth of a child, Egg’s data shows.
