Identity theft victims can get increased help
September 18, 2008
According to a recent report victims of identity fraud will now receive additional help thanks to a new scheme that has been put into place. The scheme means that those that fall victim to this sort of fraud will now only have to make one telephone call in order to get their credit records straightened out rather than having to make three calls, as was the case prior to the scheme.
This is because the nation’s three credit reference agencies, which are CallCredit, Experian, and Equifax, will now notify one another when putting a consumer’s credit record straight, making things easier and faster for the consumer. The move has been welcomed by the National Consumer Council.
Speaking about the scheme an official from the National Consumer Council stated: “It simplifies the whole process of sorting out the mess left behind by fraudsters and helps victims get their finances back on track.”
The credit reference agencies will also be working together to provide other financial institutions with details of fraudulent activity. Consumers are able to get copies of their credit report from the credit reference agencies for a couple of pounds, which can help them to identify attempted fraud and identity theft.
