How can you boost your earnings and savings?

September 15, 2008

protectionWith most household finances in something of a state to put it mildly more and more people have been thinking about ways in which they can boost their earnings and increase their savings. Finances have been hit hard over the past year or so by rising borrowing costs, soaring food and petrol prices, higher borrowing costs, and soaring energy bills, and this has left consumers struggling to make ends meet some months never mind out any money aside in case of emergencies.

There are various ways in which you can try and increase your earnings and savings, and you will be surprised at how quickly the money can start rolling in simply by using some common sense and exercising some determination. By looking at increasing the money that comes in to the home and reducing the money that goes out you could quickly start getting your finances back on track.

There are a number of ways in which you may be able to increase the money that is coming into the home, thus improving your ability to meet your financial obligations and even improve your savings. This includes:

  • Getting a second job: You may find that there is a weekend or evening job available that could help you to earn a little extra, especially as we edge closer to the Christmas period when many shops are looking for temporary part time staff. Keep your eyes peeled for a job that fits in with your existing commitments and could help to boost your income.
  • Put your talents to good use: If you have a qualification or talent that could benefit others then put it to good use and earn money from it. For example, if you are able to repair computers and sort out IT problems you will probably find many people in need of your services. Get the word around and charge a competitive rate, and you could soon be earning a tidy sum.
  • Make money from your clutter: Many of us have rooms filled with clutter than we no longer want or use, but which may come in very useful to someone else. Try selling some of this on a marketplace such as eBay or do a car boot sale – you could clear your home and earn some money at the same time.

There are also a number of ways in which you can reduce your outgoings in order to give you more money. This includes:

  • Cut out the smoking: This is one of the unhealthiest habits you can have, and a very expensive one to boot. Seize the opportunity to save a small fortune each month and improve your health by kicking the habit once and for all – there is plenty of stop smoking help available these days.
  • Don’t go overboard with the lotto: The chances of winning the lottery are extremely remote, yet some people spend £20 to £30 a week or more on lottery games and scratch cards. There is no problem putting on one or two lines each week, but try and refrain from entering lines into every draw, as there are now three main draws a week, and this can work out to be very costly.
  • Reduce your petrol costs and get healthy: If you don’t work too far from home then you may find that you can really cut your petrol costs by investing in a bike, even a second hand one, which shouldn’t cost too much. This will enable you to improve your fitness levels and your finances all at the same time.
  • Cut back on your outings: Whether you tend to pop to the pub most nights for a few beers or head out for meals to save cooking you need to remember that all of this costs money. Instead, look for cheaper alternatives. For example, enjoy a drink at home with your friends or your partner whilst cosying up and watching telly. Cook a meal at home for your partner or friends rather than going out for meals all the time. Instead of spending a few pounds per person to go to the cinema try spending a few pounds on one DVD, which you can then all watch together rather than having to pay separate admission prices.
  • Pack your own lunch: Many of us spend a fortune buying lunches whilst at work, and often we end up with bland, fast food whilst still finding ourselves out of pocket. Instead, make your own lunches the night before, which means that you can enjoy having what you want for lunch and you won’t be paying a fortune.
