Be Rewarded By Using Your Credit Card!
September 4, 2008
Over the years the credit card sector has really evolved, and whereas previously consumers had very little choice when it came to credit card types, these days there are all sorts of cards catering for a wide range of needs and circumstances. One of the credit card types available in the market these days is the rewards based credit card, and many consumers could enjoy making a little back from the credit card provider with one of these cards.
Traditionally credit cards have been used by consumers, who have then paid for their credit through interest charges as well as other fees and charges applied by the credit card provider. Rewards based credit cards are different in that they allow the cardholder to actually earn money or rewards from the card provider, and if used effectively the cardholder will not have to pay for the privilege of using the card but can still accrue rewards.
You can choose from a variety of rewards with this type of credit card, and this includes discounts, travel related rewards, loyalty points, air miles, cash back, and many more. You should choose a card based on the type of reward that you will use, as this means that you can make the most of the rewards simply by using your credit card in the usual way. Remember to compare cards, as the level of reward offered can vary from one card and provider to another.
One thing to remember is that rewards based credit cards will not prove ideal for those that do not repay their balance in full each month. If you repay your balance in full every month then you will not be charged any interest, yet you will still accrue points, rewards, or cash back for each pound that you spend on the card, enabling you to make something from the card provider. If, however, you do not clear your balance in full each month you will be hit with hefty interest charges, and this can far outweigh any rewards that you make from your spending.
Also, you should remember that these rewards are only paid on purchases that are made on the credit card, and are not paid on cash transactions and withdrawals. Therefore you should avoid making such transactions, as they will not earn any reward and you will be charged interest and fees on these transactions. Remember to look out for special bonuses on these cards as well – for example, some car providers operate tiered schemes where you earn higher reward levels once you reach a certain level of spending, or some offer bonus rewards when you first open your account.
Whilst the level of reward offered per pound spent may seem quite low you will find that if you use your card regularly these can soon add up. You should use the card as much as possible to pay for your everyday purchases as well as larger, one off purchases, but make sure that you repay the balance in full within the interest free period.
