Gas bills to exceed £1000 a year

August 12, 2008

A recent report has shown that gas bills in the UK could rise to over £1000 a year for some households, as the energy giants continue to hike up energy prices, claiming that increased costs on wholesale energy are forcing them to increase their gas and electricity prices.

A couple of providers, including EDF Energy and British Gas have hiked up prices recently, and others are set to follow suit.

The energy giants have already hikes up energy prices once this year, and most will have done so again by the autumn. Officials state that with the cost of electricity added some households could end up paying over £1600 a year for their energy usage. With households finances already strained the rising cost of energy usage is likely to add further misery for many households.

One industry official said that many people would have to change their lifestyles in order to cut back on costs. He said: ‘People will change the temperature in the house. Maybe it will be a case of two jumpers instead of one. They will be more cognisant of energy waste and will buy better appliances.’

Many more households could be pushed into fuel poverty as a result of the rising prices. One official said: ‘Domestic users have to adjust to higher gas prices and prepare for a future where energy costs will account for a more significant proportion of the household budget.’
