Moneysupermarket warns drivers over bank holiday rush

August 29, 2006

Price comparison site Moneysupermarket.com has issued advice to drivers who may be driving at irregular hours this weekend to avoid the bank holiday rush of traffic.

According to the site’s research, a quarter of bank holiday car trips will begin before the working week has finished.

Some one in twenty drivers will leave in the middle of the night, according to the study, while over 28 per cent will make a particularly early getaway to avoid the traffic.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at Moneysupermarket.com, described the choice between leaving early or waiting until later as a “toss-up” for most drivers.

“If you are thinking of leaving in the small hours, make sure you really are alert enough to drive and be prepared to make regular stops,” Mr Mason said.

“You should also ensure you have all the emergency items and details you need in case of a night-time car breakdown.”

Of all the people going away this weekend, Moneysupermarket finds that eight per cent plan to leave at a sociable time – between 07:00 BST and midday on Saturday, while seven per cent will choose to travel on Sunday instead.
