Gas bills could soar by £400
July 2, 2008
A recent report has highlighted how the average gas bill for UK households could rocket by around £400 per year after industry sources revealed that the cost of gas usage could rise by a massive 40% later on this year.
This is likely to plunge many households into fuel poverty, and will put further strain on the household finances of many consumers.
Some expect the massive rises to come into play in the latter quarter of this year, whereas others think that it will come over the next twelve months. Some also think that the first of the increases will be announced over the coming weeks, which is bad news considering the soaring cost of petrol and food.
At present the average household pays around £980 per year for their gas and electricity usage, but this is set to rocket to around £1400 a year. Energy companies have blamed massive rises in the cost of wholesale energy for the rising costs that are being passed on to consumers in the UK.
In the meantime the government has stated that it has plans in place to try and assist struggling households, including reforms to data protection acts that will make it easier to approach struggling bill payers with a view to getting them assistance.
