Contents insurance advice for studentsParents are advised to include students in their home contents insurance policy in order to save money, moneysupermarket.com has said. [singular, past tense].

Students run up high costs at university, with loans, credit card bills and accommodation expenses all adding up to over £30,000 on average.

However, one thing parents don’t need to splash out on is contents insurance for their student children, as it is free when included their home contents policy.

Many insurers such as Lloyds TSB, Norwich Union and esure, are including this offer in their policies.

The option is available for a student child who is living on a university campus.

Peter Gerrard, head insurer at moneysupermarket.com, urged parents to take advantage of the current offers available.

He said: "It may not cost anything at all if students are able to take out cover under their parents’ home contents policies. It’s easy to do and will save much needed cash at a time when budgeting is tight."
