More Than comments on risk of “changing crime”
July 24, 2006
The face of crime in the UK is undergoing a change, with offenders using new methods and shifting their targets, according to a new report by insurer More Than.
Figures from the Home Office show that burglary has fallen in recent times but street crime has increased and More Than suggests that thieves are now targeting smaller items such as jewellery, cash and handbags rather than large items such as televisions and videos.
Modern possessions such as iPods and mobile phones have also become targets for thieves.
Other types of crime are also increasing in frequency, the company reports, with identity theft currently the fastest growing crime in Britain.
Craig Allen, head of home insurance for More Than, said: “We are seeing a general increase in people carrying valuable items around with them during the day, which is making it easier for thieves to steal small, but high value items, such as handheld computers and mobile phones.
“The best advice is to take sensible preventative measures. We urge people not to advertise valuable items when out on the streets and to make sure all items are insured.”
London was found to be the area to experience the highest level of street crime, followed by the West Midlands and Greater Manchester.
