Football fans show faith in savings

July 28, 2006

At least 70,000 football fans are following their teams from the pitch to the bank.

Latest figures from Britannia show a 14 per cent increase in the take up of “save and support” accounts with 12 clubs within the past 18 months.

Tim Franklin, Britannia’s managing director of member business, commented: “It is hard to encourage people, especially children, to get in to a regular savings habit.

“The save and support accounts make saving more interesting as savers feel that they are benefiting their favourite team as well as making an investment in their own financial future.”

Results come as the football season prepares to kick off, but the accounts linked to Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Stoke City and Ipswich Town are available all year round.

In addition to associating their bank balance with their favourite football team, fans can get up to a one per cent bonus on their daily average balance transferred to their club.
