Customers advised to incorporate breakdown cover

July 17, 2006

Motor insurance customers have been advised by Liverpool Victoria that they could potentially save £39 a year if they incorporate breakdown cover into their vehicle protection. If drivers do this rather than becoming a member of a motoring association, it could lead to a collective saving of £250 million, the company claims.Nigel Snell, head of external affairs at Liverpool Victoria, said: “We recognise that Britain’s drivers who join motoring associations directly do receive a valuable service.”However, millions of motorists could save significantly by extending their existing motor insurance policy to include breakdown cover, rather than joining a motoring association directly.”The current season is also particularly fitting to consider this issue, according to Liverpool Victoria, as the summer holiday period is “prime time” to review breakdown cover with millions of people driving off on their trips away. This is a potential saving that has been overlooked by many motorists as they strive to reduce their motoring bills, the insurer states. It estimates that the current cost of keeping a car on the road, considering fuel prices, taxes and congestion charges, is £2,500 a year.
