Don’t get into debt over World Cup televisions
June 3, 2010
As most people know the long awaited World Cup is now just around the corner, and many of the millions of excited fans who have been waiting for this time to come will be excitedly looking into getting a new state of the art television set so that they can watch the football with high quality picture and sound.
However, this is something that many electrical retailers are said to have got wind of, and according to a recent report many have hiked up not only the cost of the television sets themselves but also the cost of the warranties and insurance that comes with these high tech devices, which could leave many football fans paying way over the odds and even getting into high levels of debt.
Some big name electrical retailers are cashing in on the demand for televisions by charging hundreds of pounds for the insurance cover alone, and adding a thousand pounds or more on the cost of the television set. This means that some people could end up paying 75 percent more for a £2000 television if taken on credit.
It is thought that television sales will see a year on year growth of around 80 percent by the time the World Cup comes around, and retailers are now pushing their most expensive products to take advantage of this as well as hiking up prices.
One financial industry expert said: ‘If you have an interest rate of 29.9%, that’s obscene. Don’t let your enthusiasm for the World Cup blind you to the real cost. You may be paying off debt at a high rate for years after it’s all over, and then you’ll be left with a debt headache as well as a football hangover.’
