Fraud on foreign soil grows
June 4, 2007
About 1.3 million Britons have been defrauded while on holiday, according to research by one travel insurance company.
The survey for InsureandGo revealed that 23 per cent of Britons who have gone on holiday have had over £1,000 stolen by credit card fraudsters.
And the introduction of chip and pin technology has not put the brakes on the overseas crime because many cash machines abroad still rely on the magnetic strip instead of the chip.
Since the introduction of the security technology in February 2006, the rate of fraud abroad has risen.
In the four previous years, there were an average of 220,000 incidents of debit or credit card fraud overseas, but last year, 400,000 Britons were stung by scams while on holiday abroad.
Perry Wilson from InsureandGo said: "As our research shows, holiday card fraud is a massive problem and is continuing to get worse."
The travel insurance provider has announced plans to launch a pre-paid card which can function as a debit card abroad. However, because it does not have an overdraft facility, it limits what thieves can take if they manage to clone the card.

Hi all, I too am studying Criminology and am flying through it thanks to the govermnent website (direct.gov), local authority sites and search engines like Google and Ask. By simply copying and pasting the questions or parts of them in I am getting a vast amount of information. University sites have proven useful too, although trickier to navigate. Good luck with your courses.
