Save heartache (as well as a bundle of cash) with proper insurance

June 9, 2006

A good home insurance package could come in extremely useful for many men – or indeed women – Prudential Insurance has claimed today, as it reports that £94 million worth of wedding and engagement rings go missing every year.

The company also states that 13 per cent of men lose their wedding ring within just three months of tying the proverbial knot.

Of the unfortunate newlyweds who lose their wedding rings, 61 per cent of these have no insurance cover arranged, according to Prudential.

As could possibly be expected, men appear to be generally more careless than women, as one in five husbands lose their wedding ring within the first year, compared to one in twenty wives.

Some eight per cent of married couples reportedly do not have either their original wedding or engagement rings – a statistic which somewhat contradicts the representation of eternal love and commitment that wedding rings are intended to carry.

“Losing something as precious as a wedding or engagement ring is upsetting enough but over 18,000 people this year will suffer a double blow when they realise they have no insurance to cover their loss,” said Phil Southgate, media relations manager for Prudential Home Insurance.

“With many engagement rings costing the equivalent of a month’s salary, forking out for a replacement on such a short time is no small feat and making sure they are appropriately covered is important.”
