Halifax predicting record claims over sporting summer

June 21, 2006

Halifax Insurance has predicted that companies will see a record number of claims this summer as amateur sport enthusiasts all over the UK get carried away trying to emulate their football and tennis playing heroes.

According to the insurer, it already experiences a 20 per cent increase in claims on broken windows during summer months.

It is anticipating a particular high this year, however, particularly on and immediately after July 9th, when the finals of the World Cup and the men’s final at Wimbledon coincide.

The bank is also forecasting an overall rise in the number of people indulging in ball sports this summer, with football fever gripping the nation, cricket increasing in popularity following England’s Ashes win last year and the dry season that has been predicted.

“It’s great that young and old alike are inspired by their sporting heroes but it might be safer to take ball games to the local park,” said Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter for Halifax Home Insurance.

“Homeowners should definitely make sure they are covered for such events.”

According to the bank’s research, Southend-on-Sea suffered the most accidental window breakages in 2005, followed by Ayrshire and Watford & St Albans.
