Increased costs deter drivers from using cars
May 6, 2008
A recent report has shown that many car drivers in the UK are being put off from using their vehicles simply because of the costs now associated with driving. Rising costs such as car insurance cover and petrol have become a problem for many drivers, who are also battling to keep up with other rising costs.
One industry official said: “Many people are finding their finances are being squeezed to the limit, and when that limit breaks something has to give. For some that means leaving the car in the drive and taking the bus or bicycle to work because driving has simply become to expensive. Petrol costs are high but the single biggest outlay a driver has to account for is their insurance premium. And as it’s illegal to drive without it the only way to minimise the damage is to shop ’til you drop and get the best possible car insurance deal you can find.”
The research showed that a quarter of drivers are now using their cars less as a result of these rising costs – around three quarters of those cutting back on car use blamed the rising cost of petrol and car insurance for their decision.
With many households having to cut back on a variety of costs such as food, going out, and spending, many have had no choice but to start cutting back on costs such as those associated with keeping a vehicle on the road.
