A quarter of drivers could find that their insurance is invalid due to false information

May 8, 2008

According to a recent report around a quarter of drivers in the UK could find that their car insurance cover is actually not valid simply due to false information that they have provided to the insurance company. Even some lies that some may consider to be white lies by some applicants can invalidate your insurance cover.

Recent research showed that around 26% of drivers in the UK had provided false information on their insurance application, and this could result in their cover being classed as invalid if the false information is discovered when the driver tries to make a claim.

There are a number of areas where many drivers provide false information in order to reduce their premiums, but in the long run this can cost the driver dearly.

Amongst the things that drivers tend to lie about are their address, the mileage that they do, where the car is parked, past claims, points on their license, and more.

Officials are now concerned that some consumers are providing false details to save a small amount of money but are then having to foot the cost of when they discover that the insurance is not valid.

One official said: “Lying to an insurer is often considered to be a ‘victimless crime’, but this is far from the truth. Many motorists would never dream of illegally driving without insurance, but they seem to be blissfully unaware that entering inaccurate information on a motor insurance application could make their policy worthless, leaving themselves and those around them at considerable risk.”
