Nottingham homes have 'highest burglary risk'
May 29, 2007
Nottingham has topped a league table of the UK’s most burgled cities.
Research carried out by home insurance company Endsleigh revealed that residents of Nottingham are almost twice as likely to make a claim for items stolen from the home than the national average.
The study claims that people in Nottingham are 88.7 per cent more at risk of being burgled than the average. Households in Leeds and Hull were next on the risk list, with a 63.2 per cent and 55.6 per cent above average risk respectively.
This is the second year in a row that the East Midlands city has topped the chart, despite Nottingham police claiming a seven per cent reduction in burglaries since April.
London and Oxford completed the top five of the most burglary-prone places, with all of the top five housing large student populations.
At the other end of the scale, Guildford was the safest, followed by Swindon, Dundee, Bath and Coventry, with three of the top ten safest cities located in Scotland.
Pauline Searle, Liberal Democrat councillor for Guildford North said she was unsure why her city was safer, suggesting to the Daily Mail that it could be residents involvements in neighbourhood watch teams.
Stuart Wartalski of Endsleigh said: "There are a range of steps that householders can take to protect their homes, such as installing burglar alarms, window locks, double-glazing and motion-sensitive lighting."
