Where Can You Go For Your Foreign Currency?

April 22, 2008

currencySo you’re planning to take a trip abroad and want to make sure you have the foreign currency you need when you arrive rather than try to exchange money at your destination.

You may be making a purchase or a piece of property abroad or you may be a visitor to the UK wanting to exchange your currency for the British pound. There are many places where you can exchange currency before you take a trip and after you arrive at your destination.

Some of the places include your local post office, the banking institution that you use, a hotel serving many foreign customers and even at the airport. For example, there is a foreign currency exchange at Heathrow Airport, as well as all international airports.

Before you do exchange your UK pound for the currency used at your destination, you should check online to see what the exchange rate is for that day. Rates tend to change overnight so what you will get for your money one day may not be the same the next day.

By using an online currency converter, you enter the amount of money in pounds you want to convert and then check the exchange currency. Once you click the convert button, you will see how much you will get in return.

You do need to know how much money this really is in the foreign country in terms of what you can buy with it.

Your bank will have the currency exchange in their computers for that day, so you will get the going rate. However, since the rates are so volatile at the present time, it is advisable to only exchange enough money for your immediate travel needs and wait until you arrive to exchange more.

This is true only of countries where there is no problem getting your money changed into the currency of the country. In some third world countries, this may not be easy or if your destination is in a remote part of the country, you may not have immediate access to a foreign exchange and therefore, you do need to change all of your funds.

Some places charge a fee for exchanging currency. This is true of hotels, so you should ask first what the cost will be to exchange a certain amount of money.

If you do not realize that this cost could be there, you may short change yourself leaving you short of funds. If you plan to use your credit card, then you don’t have to carry a large amount of the foreign currency with you because when you make your purchases, the conversion takes place through the credit card company.

This is something that you should be careful about though because theses transactions do not go through immediately. There may be a delay of a day or two or even more if you make your purchase on the weekend, during which time the rates may have changed substantially, meaning that you paid a lot more for your purchase than you originally intended.

Another avenue of exchanging your foreign currency is through an ATM. When you want to withdraw funds, you will receive the money in the currency of the country. There is a fee involved for using the ATM in this manner when it is not the one belonging to your bank.

If this is what you would prefer to do, you need to check to make sure that there is a branch of your bank in this country. Even if you deal with a leading bank at home, it is very unlikely you will find a branch in a foreign country.

One way to avoid a lot of charges is to make sure that if you do withdraw money through the ATM, you take out enough at one time to do you so it will only be a one-time additional charge.

The local post office is a possibility for exchanging money as well. However, it is unlikely you will be able to exchange your UK pounds for foreign currency at home, and will have to wait until you arrive to perform this transaction.

Then there are firms that specialize in foreign currency exchange. When you choose to work with one of these firms, you will have a representative that will work with you to make sure you get the best exchange rate.

This person will also sit down and explain the ins and outs of the exchange so that you understand all aspects of the transaction. You don’t have to pay a fee to set up an account with one of these firms and you won’t have to pay any commissions.

You can have money wired all over the world when you use this type of service and the currency rates are continually being updated so that you only pay the rate at the time of your exchange.
