Drivers caught on phones to face tougher penalties

Over the past couple of years the penalties for drivers that are caught on mobile phones have becoming increasingly stringent, and according to a recent report drivers that are now caught committing this offence are set to face even tougher action in terms of their car insurance premiums, which could rocket.
Allianz Insurance has announced that it is to be the first insurance provider than enforces a huge hike in premiums for drivers that are caught using a handheld mobile phone whilst driving. This will be in addition to the three points and the £60 fine that these drivers already face from authorities.
One Allianz spokesperson said: ‘By increasing the premiums for drivers with mobile phone convictions we are reinforcing the fact that this is a dangerous and needless act. If you are convicted of using a mobile phone while driving not only do you face a fine and points on your licence, you will also suffer the added financial burden of increased car insurance.’
The Association of British Insurers stated: ‘There is very clear evidence that suggests you are more likely to have an accident if you use your mobile while driving. The law on this issue is very clear and drivers should not do it.’

i do not know how long this has been illegal for, but the amount of drivers that i still see using mobile phones is ridiculous!
handsfree kits and parrots etc are not as dear as they used to be, and lets be honest is any phone call that important that it’s worth risking killing yourself or someone else just to answer it.
i know there are arguements that we change channel on the radio, or unwrap a biscuit whilst driving, or even shout at the kids in the back – but i do believe that mobiles are more dangerous.
i am not sure of the current penalties for using a mobile phone in the car, i don’t think penalty points are the answer – people feel the pinch much more in their pocket – or a stint of community service would get the message across – because they could be doing a stint inside if they kill someone!
