Who is most at risk from identity theft?

March 28, 2008

According to a recent report based on statistical data those most at risk of becoming a victim of identity theft in the UK are young professional males that live in the London area.

Identity theft has become a topic of real concern over recent years, with recent data loss incidents by banks and government agencies adding the consumers’ concern about the safety of their personal data.

A fraud prevention expert recently stated: ‘The majority of adults in the UK have a bank or building society account, yet just half actually trust those organisations with their personal information. Well over 45m people in the UK have a mobile phone, but less than one in 10 of those polled trust their mobile company with their personal details.’

He also stated: ‘Essentially, businesses need to tackle identity fraud with the same vigour as they are already doing with environmental issues. If they don’t, then it’s highly likely that consumers will form pressure groups to get their voices heard.’
The figures come from a report compiled by the DQM group, which also showed the increased level of distrust that consumers now have when it comes to the safety of their personal data with banks and government agencies.
