Saving Money On Your Holidays

March 19, 2008

imageThere are many ways to save money when you want to take a holiday, but you have to shop around to realize these savings. The first thing you can do to save money is to book early. The closer you are to the dates you want for travel or to book accommodations, the higher prices you pay.

This is true in most cases, but if you search online, there are many last-minute travel opportunities in flights, cruises and vacation packages that are less than what you would pay when you book early. This is because many travel agencies want to fill all the spaces they have pre-booked and are willing to give a discount.

Vacation packages offer savings for holidays because they are all-inclusive. They not only save you money but they save you time as well because you can book your flight and accommodations.

You can choose to have all your food and drinks included in the price of the package. In these packages you have the full price paid in full before you even leave, which reduces the stress of having to make sure you have enough money to last you while you are enjoying yourself in some exotic location.

Even though it is not often possible for families with children, you can save money if you look for holiday packages during the off-season. The accommodations are cheaper in those times of the year because the owners do not have many people trying to get bookings for certain dates.

The flights are also cheaper in those times as well. If you take a look at the prices of flights, you will notice that the most expensive times to fly are during the summer, at Christmas and at Easter. This is when most people are on the move and so there is more competition for the seats.

One of the problems you may have when travelling in the off-season is that many of the tourist attractions may not be open at this time of the year, but this is usually not the case if you want to travel to warmer climates.

Look at the cost of travel to out of the away places or areas that are trying to develop their tourism. There are many such deals available at various times of the year, such as a flight to Dublin for £1 or an all-inclusive package to Turkey for less than £300.

It pays to surf the Internet to look for fantastic deals in cruises and vacation packages all over the world. You can enjoy a weekend in another country for less than it would cost you to spend the weekend in a nearby town.

It is cheaper to travel in a group than alone or with a partner. Travel agencies and airlines provide discounts for groups making it cheaper for each person to contribute his/her share of the cost.

Check the hotel availability for the area you want to visit to find the cheapest hotel rates and those offering discounted rates at various times of the year. You will find hotel prices that are literally half of the regular price.

Sign up with airlines and travel agencies so that you receive emails notifying you of upcoming discounts. These discounts are for a specified time so that you have to book by a certain date and complete your travel by al later date.

Once you receive the notification, which is usually a few weeks in advance and the travel dates are usually a few months in advance, then you can start shopping around for cheap accommodations in one of the locations the airline serves.

If you have a credit card that has air miles attached to it, you can fly for free when you accumulate the required number of points. In order to take advantage of this type of offer, you do have to book early as the number of points usually increases as you get closer to the dates you want to travel.

House swapping is one way you can get your accommodations for free when you want to take a holiday. You travel to a location and stay in a home and that family travels to your town or city and stays in your home. You would have to buy groceries and cook if you were at home, so the only difference is that you are doing it in a different kitchen.

You can also opt to eat out, but you only have to pay for your flight or travel expenses to this location, the cost of your food, the use of public transportation or taxis in the city and the cost of admission to the attractions.

Shop before you buy when you want to make plans for a holiday. You may find that you will find an exciting vacation that costs less than you ever imagined.
