Cutting Back on Your Household Expenditure

imageWhether you realize that you have been overextending yourself each month or you want to save money for a special purchase or a vacation, there are ways you can cut back on the household expenditure.

The first thing you have to do is prepare a monthly budget to determine how you are spending the money you earn. You need to list all of your expenditures – bills for credit cards and loans, money for groceries, the amount of your mortgage or rent payment, the utility bills, the payments for your vehicle and the costs associated with running it, such as fuel and repairs and the money you spend on entertainment and clothing. In households with children, there could be extra expenditures associated with childcare and school lunches.

Next you have to carefully scrutinize each one of these to find ways of cutting costs. Take a look at the amount of money you spend in utility bills, such as the cost of electricity, heating fuel, phone, television and Internet each month. Many service providers for telephone service have a package deal that allows you to pay a set fee for long distance calls.

If you have a lot of long distance calls that are really adding up, signing up for a package could help you shave some money off the amount you spend in this area each month. Another aspect of this type of utility bill is that there are also packages you can get that bundle your phone television and Internet into one monthly payment. Calculate how much you spend on each of these in a month and compare them with the cost of a bundled package.

Take a close look at how you use electricity in your home. Maybe you will realize that you have lights on in every room even when you are not using these rooms. By turning off the lights when you leave a room you can save yourself some money. Switch to energy saving light bulbs, such as LED lighting. These bulbs burn far less electricity than the regular light bulbs and can save you money. Look at your heating costs.

Do you turn the heat up and down on a regular basis? This can actually cause you to burn more in electricity and fuel. It is better to set the thermostat on room comfort range and leave it there than it is to turn it up when you are cold and down when you get too warm.

You should never go grocery shopping when you are hungry. This causes you to buy a lot of food that you probably won’t eat and thus, it spoils in the refrigerator. Check the flyers from the supermarkets to find what is on special each week. You can save money by stocking up on the specials and you will always have these foods on hand when you need them instead of having to run to the store and pay the higher prices.

You should set a budget for the amount you want to spend on groceries each week. One tip for this is to plan a weekly menu and then shop for the items you need to prepare these foods. When you have food leftover from a meal, store it in a container and freeze it. Then you have a great meal ready to pop in the microwave or over for reheating when you get hungry.

How much do you spend each month in fuel costs for your vehicle? You should take a look at how often you use the vehicle to go places where you can easily walk. This will cut down on your expenses and help you engage in a healthy lifestyle. If the repairs are adding up on the vehicle, you can actually save money by investing in a new vehicle.

You could trade the vehicle in or you could sell it privately and use the money on a down payment for a new one. Compare the costs of the repairs with the cost of a monthly payment to determine if this will help you save any money.

The area of spending money on clothing and entertainment could be one in which you could cut costs. If you are the type of person that loves to shop and often buys frivolous items, then you can definitely save money. You don’t need to have a new outfit for every occasion. It is possible to make an old outfit look new by simply adding a few accessories, such as a scarf or a belt.

Eating out at restaurants is very costly and if this is something you do on a regular basis, it is one area in which you can cut down on your household expenditures. Having a few friends over for a meal is a cheaper alternative, especially if you make it into a potluck affair. Instead of going to the movies once or twice a week, it is a lot cheaper to rent a movie and watch it at home.

There may not be much that you can do about the expenses associated with childcare, but you can save money on your lunches and those of your children. Pack a healthy lunch instead of giving the children money to buy lunch at school, unless it is cheaper to do so. You can also bring your own lunch to work rather than popping into the pup of café for lunch every day.

Before you make a major purchase, ask yourself if it something you want or something you need. It is really easy to cut down on expenditures when you think before you buy. You should also shop around for the cheapest prices when you do really need to make a purchase.
