Northern Rock causes rows to erupt amongst political parties
February 21, 2008
The Northern Rock situation has resulted in further rows erupting between politicians recently, with verbal attacks on the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, from the Conservative party leader David Cameron, and verbal attacks on the Conservative party from the Lib Dems.
The government recently announced that the troubled bank may be placed into public ownership – a plan that the Conservative party was not impressed with. David Cameron also accused Gordon Brown of being too slow to act when the crisis occurred, stating that he was more concerned about an up and coming general election in the autumn.
In the meantime the Conservative party has been slated by the Lib Dems. Vince Cable from the Lib Dems stated:
“The Conservatives have repeatedly stated that the nationalisation of Northern Rock would be a disaster, yet they have completely failed to offer what their alternative would be if a viable private bidder cannot be found.”
He also said:
“We must assume that if no private bidder can be found, the Tories would rather see Northern Rock go into administration. It would seem that the Tories’ rhetoric, like the rest of their economic policy, is nothing more than an empty shell of warm words and zero substance.”
