London embraced tap and go cards

February 18, 2008

Last year the tap and go payment card was launched in London, where it was to be trialled in order to gauge popularity and effectiveness before being rolled out to other parts of the UK.

A recent report has shown that the tap and go card is proving popular amongst consumers and businesses in London, so it looks as though these cards could eventually become more commonplace.

In order to accept payment by the card firms and retailers have to have a special reader installed. The card can be used to make payments of up to £10 at a range of participating firms, including eateries, taxi firms, public transport, shops, and even pubs in some cases. Money is taken from the cardholders account as soon as the card is swiped, and no signature or PIN number is needed.

Consumers that have been using the card have stated that the card provides convenience, ease, and less hassle, making it quicker and easier to make smaller purchases.

Retailers have also stated that the card improves speed and convenience, with one shop owner stating: ‘We do three-quarters of our business between 12pm and 2pm. Anything we can do to help the queue move forward quickly helps us and our customers.
