Is now the time to take debt advice?
February 6, 2008
The debt mountain in the UK seems to be getting higher each year, and there are rising concerns over how many people are going to hang on to their homes in light of the current financial climate combined with the high level of debt that many people are having to deal with.
With debt levels and credit conditions the way that they are is may be time for many individuals to ask themselves whether it is now time to take advice about their debts.
Far too many people tend to bury their heads in the sand when it comes to dealing with their debts, and instead of taking advice about their debt levels they simply ignore the problems and hope that it goes away. Instead it usually tends to get worse and worse until the debt becomes totally unmanageable.
If you have got high levels of debt and you are struggling to meet your repayments then it is important that you take advice as early on as possible.
The one thing that you definitely need to avoid is missing out on your mortgage or rent repayments, as this could result in you losing your home, but if you do not address your debt problems as early on as possible you may find that your financial situation leaves you in a position where you cannot avoid missing rent or mortgage repayments.
Getting advice on your debts these days is far easier than it used to be in the past, as there is plenty of support out there for those that are struggling with repayments.
This support has grown recently as a result of the credit crunch and rising living costs, which has resulted in more and more people finding themselves in a situation where finances are stretched to crisis point.
There are a number of fee free debt counselling agencies in operation these days, and it is important that you find an agency that does offer fee free advice, otherwise you will be getting yourself into even more debt in order to get advice to get you out of debt, which is defeating the object.
You can even go to the Citizen’s Advice Bureau for advice if you cannot easily locate a fee free agency. There are a number of ways in which a debt counsellor may be able to help you to deal with your debts.
In the first instance your debt counsellor will be able to go through your income and outgoings with a fine tooth comb in order to determine where you might be able to make cutbacks and how you can ease your financial situation.
Of course, it may be that there is pretty much nothing more you can do to make cutbacks, in which case another solution will have to be implemented in order to ease your financial situation before things get really out of hand.
If your finances cannot be rearranged in order to ease the situation then your debt counsellor may be able to get you onto a debt management plan, where all of your creditors are contact with a view to reducing repayments and extending the term of the debt so that you do not have so much to pay out each month.
Usually, when you opt for a debt management plan, you will simply make one payment to the debt management agency each month, and this will be distributed to your creditors on a pro rata basis depending on how much you owe each creditor.
The amount that you pay by way of a debt management plan will be based on your income and outgoings, but will be set at an affordable level, so that you are not left struggling each month.
Although it may take far longer to repay your debts using this method you will have the peace of mind that you are not going to financially overstretched each month.
Your debt counsellor may suggest other solutions depending on your situation, and this could even include bankruptcy or an IVA, which is a softer alternative to bankruptcy. Although these are last resort solutions there are situations where the borrower is struggling to a point where they will never be able to repay the debt, and this is where solutions such as these may be suggested.
Although you may feel embarrassed and nervous about contacting a debt management agency or counsellor with regards to your financial situation, this is the first step to easing your financial problems and getting yourself back on track.
You can look online to find a suitable debt management counsellor, and once you have discussed your situation with him or her you can agree to a suitable solution to help you with your debt
