Clarkson embarrassed over bank account fraud
February 25, 2008
Jeremy Clarkson, the presenter of Top Gear, recently embarrassed himself by stating that concerns over bank fraud were simply people making a fuss about nothing – and then becoming the victim of bank fraud himself.
Clarkson has now admitted that he was wrong to rubbish the concerns of consumers who had been worries about their bank details falling into the wrong hands after the HM Revenue and Customs data loss blunder last year.
After claiming that the whole episode about the data loss was simply a fuss about nothing Clarkson printed his own bank details, including sort code and account number, in a column in the Sun newspaper.
In the column Clarkson wrote:
“All you’ll be able to do with them is put money into my account. Not take it out. Honestly, I’ve never known such a palaver about nothing.”
However, after his details were printed one reader set up a direct debit in Clarkson’s name using his account details, and £500 of his money went to the charity Diabetes UK.
Clarkson then stated:
“I opened my bank statement this morning to find out that someone has set up a direct debit which automatically takes £500 from my account.
The bank cannot find out who did this because of the Data Protection Act and they cannot stop it from happening again. I was wrong and I have been punished for my mistake.”
