February 28, 2008

In a recent announcement Barclays Bank has reported that 160 staff members from its credit card division in Northampton are to lose their jobs at the end of this year.

The Northampton division deals with the production of credit cards and the mailing of statements, and these processes will be moved to other areas across the UK.

The Northampton site is to close at the end of this year, which will leave 160 workers without jobs. However, the bank is offering full support, and those staff member still working there when the site closes will be given three months full pay whilst they look for alternative employment.

One Barclays Bank official stated:

“Decisions like these are never easy and we will do everything we can to support our colleagues affected by this change. Barclaycard operates in an extremely competitive industry and we are looking to build a global credit card business”

The card production side of things is said to be moving to the Hampshire area, whilst other work that is currently performed at the Northampton site will move to other parts of the UK, including Milton Keynes, Leicester, and Gloucestershire.
