Take advantage of credit building solutions

January 23, 2008

Having a poor credit rating can make life far more difficult when it comes to your finances, yet more and more of us are finding ourselves in a position where our credit is less then perfect. Life was already difficult enough for those with poor credit in the past, but since the credit crunch swept across the Atlantic from the United States and wreaked havoc in the UK financial markets life has become even more difficult for those with damaged credit.

Many lenders are now increasing stringency when it comes to lending because of increased fears over defaults and concerns over inter-bank lending costs, and this means that the group most likely to be left out in the cold is those with poor credit.

This is why it has become increasingly important for those with a poor credit history and rating to do all that they can do rebuild their credit. Of course, you may have a poor credit rating through no fault of your own – for instance, as a result of mistakes and errors on your credit report or through association with someone that lives or lived in your house.

In cases such as these you should contact the credit referencing agencies and asked them to amend your records accordingly. For this reason it is important that you keep a close eye on your credit report, as otherwise you may not even realise that your credit history and rating have been affected.

The other way in which your credit rating may take a battering is if you miss repayments on debts or bills payments, or if you make regular late payments. Your credit rating can also be adversely affected if you make a lot of applications for finance in a short space of time, so if you are refused finance you should always make sure that you wait at least three months before you make another application to avoid further damaging your credit.

The goods news is that there are some credit building solutions available today, and these can help you to improve your credit, although the process can be a long and slow one.

You also need to exercise willpower and determination when using these credit building solutions, as failure to stick to the rules could result in your credit being damaged even further rather than helping you to rebuild your credit.

A number of lenders offer credit cards that are designed for those with a bad credit rating. You shouldn’t get too excited, as these cards usually will not offer high credit limits and do not come with extra benefits such as rewards or interest free credit.

The sole purpose of these credit cards is to provide those with poor credit with the ability to rebuild their credit through sensible and responsible spending on and repayment of the card. Lenders such as Capital One and Vanquis are well known for provision of these cards, but do bear in mind that there is no guarantee that you will be eligible for one of these credit cards.

The interest rates on credit cards designed for those with bad credit can be very high, and this is something to look out for. Ideally, what you should be doing is using the card for day to day spending and then repaying it in full each month so that you do not get hit with interest charges.

This is also the best way to rebuild your credit, as you will be paying your card off in full each month and will not risk late payments, missed repayments, and the various fees and charges associated with these.

You can also consider loans for those with bad credit. You can get these loans on an unsecured basis from some lenders, such as Welcome Finance, but the interest rates on unsecured loans for those with bad credit can be very high.

If you are a homeowner you may be able to get a more affordable bad credit loan, as the lender has additional security with a secured loan. However, you will still pay a higher APR than someone with good credit would have to pay.

The important thing to remember is whether you opt for a credit card or a loan for bad credit consumers you must ensure that you make at least the minimum repayment requested each month, and you must ensure that you do not default on repayments.

Over time, as you continue making repayments the state of your credit should start to improve, and this will provide you with greater access to more competitive deals on finance from mainstream lenders in the future. You will find a range of lenders that offer these bad credit solutions online, but as with all forms of finance you should compare different deals to find the most suitable and competitive one for your needs.
