Parents risking their home for children’s gap year

January 4, 2008

The time has come again where thousands of students have finished their exams and they have either set off on, or they are planning to go on, a gap year. The reasons for taking a gap year vary, but for many it is an experience that they will never forget. However, what many parents do not realise is that if adequate travel insurance is not taken out for the gap year, it could well be an experience that the parent will never forget either!

Many parents unknowingly risk their homes each year as their children set off on an around the world adventure. The dangers that come with travelling can be quite high, so without adequate travel insurance if something were to happen then it could cost thousands of pounds that most people simply do not have. If for example your child was to get ill whilst they are travelling, they would have to stay in hospital for possibly weeks and that would not be cheap! This has meant that many parents have had to sell their homes just to get their children back home with them.

So if you have a child that is thinking of taking a gap year early next year then it would definitely be worth looking into travel insurance. Shop around to get the best deals and take your time to choose the right cover for your child. Some types of travel insurance will not cover everything. So you need to figure out which type of protection would be better suited for the gap year. There will actually be specialised travel insurance for gap year students and so that would definitely be worth looking into.

Overall going on a gap year can really help a student to grow and find out what they want to do. Just make sure that when your child does set off, that they have the right protection in case the worst should happen.
