January 22, 2008

Drivers in the UK are being warned to make sure that they do not drive without adequate insurance cover in place, as police and authorities are now clamping down on uninsured drivers. As part of the clampdown police are likely to exercise their powers to seize vehicles far more, and therefore uninsured drivers that are caught risk losing their vehicles as well as facing financial penalties.

According to recent data honest drivers that do have car insurance cover in place are being charged around £30 more a year simply to cover the cost of those that drive without cover, A high number of accidents, deaths, an injuries are caused by uninsured drivers, according to reports, and this clampdown has already saved lives.

One police official stated: ‘I cannot give you figures for the number of lives this has saved. A lot of fatal accidents are caused by uninsured, untaxed drivers.’ Another commented that more people would think twice about driving without insurance cover if the penalties are stiffer. He said: ‘Six points, a £300-£400 bill, plus the inconvenience of being without a car and the cost of buying new insurance adds up into a more meaningful punishment.’
