Oxford based business assists poorer countries with small scale loans
January 15, 2007
The charity Opportunity International UK based in Oxford, has taken on the role of helping out people within poorer countries such as Malawi. They are doing this through small loans for amounts such as £110 which may seem like a small sum to many, but to the people in poorer countries it truly is a life changing amount.
The loans are given through trust banks which are set up all around the world. The great thing about these small loans too, is that they really do change a community, not just the individual. The money helps many people set up their own businesses and with the new equipment which they are able to afford, they are able to make good profits. These profits then help to look after their family and also their neighbours. They even usually end up with a little extra money too which they can save. Not bad for a mere £110!
The micro finance trust banks cost around £5,000 to set up and one school in North Oxford has really helped to make a difference too. St Edward’s has helped to raise money for five micro finance trust banks in Malawi. This means that more people can be helped and it is slowly making a difference. We Often think that there is not much that we can do to help poorer people than ourselves, but in fact just a few pounds can really make all of the difference. Companies such as Opportunity International UK are really making a difference and for that they should be congratulated.
With so much poor debt within the UK it really does make you realise just how wealthy a country we really are. Poorer people in different countries can comfortably and wealthily live off £110, whilst many people within the UK receive loans of up to £5,000 just to spend on a new car or a holiday.
